DCEU is Taking a Hint from Black Panther When it Comes to Introducing Batgirl

We've had news that DC will be pushing back their Batgirl film after Joss Whedon left the project, but it looks like they'll be borrowing a tactic from their competition, Marvel, when it comes to introducing their Barbara Gordon.

As per Variety's Justin Kroll, the DCEU is opting to introduce Barbara in an ensemble film first before giving her a solo movie—just like Marvel did with Black Panther. He writes:

The move to go with [Birds of Prey] not only had a lot to do with [Christina] Hodson's script but also the idea of doing with BATGIRL what Marvel did with Black Panther in CIVIL WAR by introducing them into universe before giving them own film

Now the move isn't entirely original on DCEU's part. They practically did the same thing with Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, as we first meet her in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before she got her own movie. You can even argue that it was DC who did it first, seeing that BvS came out before Captain America: Civil War did.

As of now, the DCEU is tapping Dead Pigs director Cathy Yan to helm the all-female Birds of Prey movie. Along for the ride is Margot Robbie, who is set to return as Harley Quinn, while at the same time is attached as a producer.

Birds of Prey has no official release date yet, but the movie is set to start production later this year.
