A lot of DC fans have been anxious about DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran's plans for the new DCU which is expected to have a lot of changes and speculations that it will be a complete reboot of the franchise. Now, we finally have our first confirmed details regarding the new DCU slate and it is indeed a hint of a massive change coming.
Yesterday, Gunn took to Twitter to make the first wave of announcements regarding their plans for the new DCU where he revealed that they are currently developing a new Superman movie as their first slate. However, Henry Cavill will not be returning to the role despite his recent comeback.
According to his tweets, the new Superman movie will focus on the earlier part of Superman's life although it will not be an origin story. Gunn is also writing the screenplay, but no director has been set yet at the moment.
Variety also reported in addition to Gunn's announcements that it will focus on the character's life as a cub reporter in Metropolis and he will be meeting the key characters that we know such as Lois Lane. They also added that Gunn has been working on the story for some time now.
This reveal is in alignment with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav's statement some time ago where he said that Superman is going to be their top priority on the new DC franchise that they were planning to map out at that time. Days before the announcement, Gunn iterated the same comments when he responded to a fan tweet.
While it is disappointing to hear that Cavill will not be returning to the role, it is exciting at the same time to see that there's going to be another new Superman movie in the future. It would be curious to see who they'll end up casting in the role and whether Gunn will also commit to directing the project.
