James Gunn is going slow with the reveals of his DC Universe, and things are expected to slowly unravel by the time Superman comes to theatres next year. It could be a while before they build up to another Justice League film, but DC is already working on another team-up down the line.
No, it’s not another Suicide Squad movie, but they’re definitely not in the same league as the JL—yet.
Teen Titans Movie in the Works
As reported by Variety, a Teen Titans movie is said to be in the works. This was reported during their coverage of actress-turned-writer Ana Nogueira who is also the one who’s going to be providing the script for the Supergirl movie starring Milly Alcock.
No details have been revealed for Teen Titans yet, but it’s said that Supergirl is going to have more of a ‘punk’ vibe and will be a ‘science fiction epic’. Though Superman is expected to be the ‘ideal of Hope’ that Henry Cavill’s never really got to be on the big screen, Supergirl is said to be younger, more impulsive, and is still trying to adapt her Kryptonian conditioning to the more ‘squishy’ people of Earth.
Teen Titans in the Comics
The Teen Titans have been around for decades, and they were introduced as a team of young heroes way back in the 60s. The original lineup had included Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Wonder Girl. Over the years, several members have been introduced including Speedy, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, and Beast Boy.
Though they aren’t the Justice League, the Teen Titans are still pretty much super-powered beings (or at least, they can match them); and they do have all that teen angst to get through, which adds to the drama of their stories.
If anything, they were conceived to appeal to a younger audience around that time, and they’ve been frequently canceled and brought back over the years.
Titans on Television
Probably the most popular incarnation of the Titans was introduced back in 2003, with a roster that included Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Cyborg, and Raven. With its anime inspiration and teen drama, Teen Titans was considered to be a huge hit; and though they were canceled for a while, this incarnation of the Titans managed to keep going in a different format with Teen Titans Go!.
Though the cartoon Titans managed to become more bubbly and cartoonish as compared to their previous incarnation, the live-action DC Universe decided to go full dark with Titans which came out in 2018. The series still had Robin/Nightwing, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Raven, but they also included Superboy in the roster, as well as another Robin, Jason Todd.
Young Justice also has several members of the Teen Titans, but that team focuses more on the members being protégés of the Justice League—unlike the Titans titles which are more character-focused without the need to reconnect to anyone’s mentors.
It’s unclear how DC Studios is going to treat the Teen Titans at the box office, but there’s definitely a lot of room for the studio to experiment. With Supergirl’s age, maybe she could be a member of the roster, but fans will just have to wait and see.
Gunn’s DCU launches when Superman comes to cinemas on July 11, 2025.
