Tim Burton's Batman duology remains a cult classic amongst DC fans and it isn't hard to understand the impact it has over diehard supporters of the Dark Knight. The director's vision for the caped crusader which was realized via Batman 1989 and Batman Returns pretty much set the stage for superhero films that would come after it and to this very day, both films are still held in such high regard.

Now, over three decades since the original Batman film came out, DC is reviving the universe established by Burton and Michael Michael Keaton in comic book form. Batman '89 is the comic book giant's latest Dark Knight title and fans of the Burtonverse are surely in for a treat as the comics will continue Keaton's legacy. Taking place following the events of Returns, the said comic series will finally mark the debut of Billy Dee Williams as Two-Face. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman is also part of the series which kicks off on August 10.

We're not quite sure if Batman '89 will acknowledge the existence of Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever and Batman and Robin and sure, while they are basically continuations of Tim's first two Batfilms, their overall vibe doesn't exactly match the dark and gritty nature of Keaton's Batman.

I wouldn't be shocked if DC completely ignores them given the fact that it's Keaton's version of Batman they are using and not Val Kilmer or George Clooney. Honestly, I believe it's the best move and with The Flash set to hit cinemas in 2022, the comics would be the perfect tie-in series that will explain what happened to Batman all those years. However, we have no idea whether or not Batman '89 is considered canon.

Meanwhile, the DCEU's next flick, The Suicide Squad hits cinemas and HBO Max on August 5.
