DC Fans Unimpressed at Blue Beetle Calling Batman a ‘Fascist’

The first look at DC’s Blue Beetle has arrived, and while this is the first Latino-led superhero movie in DC, a particular line played off for laughs did not rub off well among DC fans. The line, “Batman is a fascist” in response to Jaime (portrayed by Xolo Maridueña) comparing his suit to the Dark Knight was not on DC fans’ list on what to expect from the upcoming film.

While the line did not come from the titular hero, fans were quick to criticize the writers behind the line on Twitter: “[Whoever] wrote that line [is] someone who’s never read Batman at all and probably hates him,” one fan said, while another commented: “[‘Batman’s a fascist’] was a weird button to end that trailer on.”

DC fans are now in a frenzy, considering that Batman still exists within the DCU, specifically in Matt Reeves’ and James Gunn’s DC slates, and the unexpected surprises that might come along with the movie, after sending the trailer ending on the wrong note.

While DC Studios and Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto have yet to comment on the initial reactions, here's what Soto has to say in handpicking the cast for the film:

“Initially, my goal with finding the family was to be able to have an authentic group of people, not just as authentic on the Latino side, but authentic on the accents and authentic on the experience overall, it was very important for me to have the elders in the family to be from Mexico,” director Soto said while announcing his chosen cast for the DC film.

Soto continued on to say, “And more than just being from Mexico is honoring those amazing beloved actors from Mexico that have paved the way not just in Latin American cinema, but also crossing over to the Anglo Saxon community and Latin American community in the United States.”

Blue Beetle also stars Jaime’s Mexican-American family: his parents Alberto (Damían Alcázar) and Bianca (Elpidia Carrillo), sister Milagro (Belissa Escobedo), grandmother Nana (Adriana Barraza), and Uncle Rudy (Lopez). Additionally, the film also has Bruna Marquezine (Jenny Kord), Raoul Max Trujillo (villain Carapax), Harvey Guillén (Dr. Sanchez), and Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord.

DC Studios’ Blue Beetle is slated to release in theaters on August 18. You can check out more details about it here.
