DC Cancels Plans to Publish Shazam/Captain Marvel: The Monster Society of Evil Deluxe Edition

With DC and Warner Bros. releasing Shazam next April, it was easy to assume that the former would start pumping out classic graphic novels featuring the character. The company did solicit stories like Shazam/Superman: First Thunder and many were excited to see Shazam: The Monster Society of Evil, a golden age Captain Marvel epic that was ahead of its time.

Unfortunately, due to racial concerns, DC has decided to cancel this collection. The company sent this message to comic retailers (via Newsarama) and even said that this deluxe graphic novel will not be solicited again, which is a huge shame.

Since it was released during World War II, the story, unfortunately, had a lot of racist stereotypes that were common at the time. Considering how Warner Bros. tends to release old Looney Toon DVDs with warnings about the racial stereotypes back then, it seemed like they would do the same for this collection.

Just to clarify, this is the original story that was released back in the golden age when the series was still called Captain Marvel. This is not the modern retelling from Bone creator Jeff Smith, though that story is also excellent and should be read.

Shazam hits theaters on April 5, 2019.
