Dave Filoni Explains Star Wars: The Clone Wars Order 66 Plot Hole

The seventh and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars might have been nothing short of a success for Lucasfilm, however, the series still had a few rough edges here and there, including an Order 66 plothole.

In the last batch of episodes of The Clone Wars, fans get to see the series contradicting a plot point from Star Wars Rebels where in Rex told Jedi and Order 66 survivor Kanan Jarrus that he never executed the order and turned on his Jedi because he had his chip removed from his body. The Clone Wars offers a narrative that counters the one presented in Rebels – in the final episodes of the series, Rex and the other clones did turn on Ahsoka when Palpatine executed Order 66. It was only after Ahsoka managed to knock Rex out and take away his chip that the Captain was able to think properly again.

Speaking in an interview with Nerdist to discuss the final season of The Clone Wars, series showrunner Dave Filoni addresses this plothole, reworking Rex's statement saying that "I took out my control chip."

According to Filoni, Rex didn't mean that he literally took out his control chip, instead, he made an active choice.

"I think when you reach [Rex] in Rebels and he says, 'I took out my control chip' to Kanan as a way of explaining that we all can make a choice," Filoni told the entertainment news site, "I think he sees that as true and I think it's one way that he's coped with things. He did get it removed. Kanan doesn't need to know the minute details of Rex's life."

This explanation might seem acceptable from "a certain point of view," but it does help cover the plothole left by The Clone Wars.
