Dave Filoni recently addressed the possibility of an R-rated Star Wars project as fans continue to clamor for it to happen.

Since the franchise's inception, Star Wars films have always toyed around the PG-13 tone which is still accessible to the general audience despite the serious themes and action-packed scenes that they are exploring.

Some fans have been wondering whether the franchise will ever explore the R-rating territory and go beyond the family-friendly tone to explore the full potential of the darker themes and elements that the projects are tackling.

In a recent interview, Filoni was asked whether they are open to the possibility of doing an R-rated Star Wars project.

While he didn't give a direct answer, he pointed out that there are potential ideas that could justify the R-rated tone. He also cited Andor as an example of how mature Star Wars can get in its style.

"It's interesting. The bottom line is whatever we do, it has to be well done. When you look at something that is taken as different as Andor, it's well done. Tony [Gilroy] and his team did such a great job that I think there's an audience for that," the Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer said.

Filoni also explained that it all depends on the sensibilities that the new filmmakers will bring to the franchise.

"I think that it encompasses all types of styles, and the creatives of these particular stories driving it is kind of the most important thing, and they should do something that's within their comfort zone. Otherwise, just imagine that everyone's gonna come and pretend that they're George Lucas, and they're not," he continued.

"I learned from George Lucas, but I'm certainly not the same as George Lucas when it comes from making movies, George is a one-of-a-kind, generational talent. We're just different, and that's okay because there are principles about choices, and being a good person, and getting over your fears, and those are timeless no matter what style you're talking about."

There are a lot of promising ideas for an R-rated Star Wars project since it gives a filmmaker all the leeway to go violent with the action scenes and explore darker themes that challenge the family-friendly nature of the franchise's mythology.

However, an R-rated project also does not guarantee that the movie will be of high quality and it still depends on the execution of the story and whether it justified the need to go with that tone.

For now, let's wait and see whether it ends up happening soon, but a lot of fans would be happy if Lucasfilm announces one day that they will explore the R-rating.
