Danish Queen Strips 4 Grandchildren Of Their Royal Titles
Queen Margrethe of Denmark has decided to strip four of her grandchildren of their royal titles. She believes that doing so "will be good for them in the future," she said in her first appearance after the dramatic decision.
The 82-year-old monarch removed the prince and princess as well as "His/Her Highness" titles from Nikolai, 23, Felix, 20, Henrik, 13, and Athena, 10, the children of her youngest son Prince Joachim.
According to Queen Margrethe, she was hoping that her move would allow her four grandchildren to "shape their own lives without being limited by the special consideration and duties" that are required of someone with formal affiliation with the Danish Royal Family.
"It is a consideration I have had for quite a long time and I think it will be good for them in their future. That is the reason," she said at a function at the National Museum in Copenhagen last night, Daily Mail reported.
The outlet noted that the grandchildren who are seventh through 10th in line to the throne would maintain their place of succession. Without their royal titles, they will be known as either His Excellency Count of Monpezat or Her Excellency Countess of Monpezat from Jan. 1, 2023.
The Queen's decision doesn't affect the descendants of her oldest son Crown Prince Frederick and Princess Mary.
"Prince Joachim's descendants will henceforth have to be addressed as Excellencies," the statement read. "The Queen's decision is in line with similar adaptations that other royal houses have implemented in different ways in recent years."
King Charles Reportedly Undecided With Prince Harry And Meghan Markle's Children's Royal Titles
King Charles has not formally acknowledged Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, as prince and princess. The British monarch's grandchildren have automatic rights to His/Her Royal Highness titles and become princes and princesses.
However, Prince Harry's father, who wanted a slimmer monarchy, seemed reluctant to acknowledge Archie and Lilibet's new titles. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are "understood to fear" that King Charles may strip their children of their titles, The Times reported.
In King Charles' inaugural speech, he announced that Prince William and Kate Middleton are the new Prince and Princess of Wales. The changes were made on the royal website. However, Archie and Lilibet are still known as "Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor" and "Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor" on the website.
Also, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were demoted on the website. Their pages were pushed further down the page, just above his disgraced uncle, Prince Andrew.
According to Page Six, Prince Harry and Markle wanted to push back their Netflix show and his memoir to edit what they said about the senior members of the royal family. They are reportedly afraid that offending the king would mean their kids would lose their titles.
Several royal experts are convinced that King Charles will hold off giving Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children prince and princess titles until their Netflix project and the Duke of Sussex's memoir are out.
