Daisy Ridley Says Rey Searching For Her Parents Isn’t A Character Flaw

Rey's main source of conflict in Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have been the search for her identity and her heritage, but Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley doesn't believe that the Jakku orphan's focus on finding her parents and reconnecting with them is any kind of weakness.

Ridley just recently sat down for a Facebook Live event to help promote the home release of Lucasfilm's latest sequel trilogy installment, and during the discussion, one of the fans online implied that Rey's hope to find her parents was her weakness.

"I do not think that is a weakness. Great question, but I don't think that is a weakness," Ridley replied. "I think longing for something, there's usually a reason you're longing for it. Even though she's very hopeful about moving forward, there's clearly some stuff that she needs to put to bed and that is all going to help her, moving forward. So I don't think that's a weakness. I think it's a wonderful...again, sort of adds to the brilliant hopefulness that, what may have happened wasn't so bad. Like, that she wasn't just left there by these awful people. And, also, it leads her on this amazing journey. That's part of the whole thing. She wouldn't have gone. I think she wouldn't have stayed if she didn't really want that. She wouldn't have had the moment with Luke and all of the other amazing stuff that happened."

Rey's journey in The Last Jedi was certainly interesting. It definitely isn't easy to learn that your parents aren't anyone special; just junkers who traded you off for a little bit of drinking money on Jakku. But then again, the truth isn't always necessarily beautiful, and the painful reality of Rey's origin only makes her stronger. We can't wait to see how Rey evolves in Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is getting its Digital HD release on March 13 and its Blu-Ray and DVD release on March 27. Star Wars: Episode IX premieres on December 20, 2019.
