Cyberpunk 2077 Quest Designer Comments on The RPG Being First-Person

We finally know a bit more about Cyberpunk 2077 and some of that information has garnered a bit of a mixed response. Though most fans are on board the create-a-character train, others are unsure about taking it through a first-person view tunnel. This is mostly because The Witcher was a third-person RPG series that worked, so fans are nervous about a new point of view.

Speaking with DualShockers, 2077 quest designer Patrick Mills has addressed these concerns by saying the game will essentially be made for first-person. It might not be the answer people want, most would probably prefer the ability to switch between first and third person camera angles, but Mills' reassurance might calm some of us down.

Well, we wanted to bring in people who were familiar with that so we have people at the studio who have worked on shooters before. We really want to make sure to get that right. Honestly, at the point now, and I know this wasn't a hands-on demonstration and it's still a work-in-progress, but even when I'm working on it and I'm playing with the developer tools shooting already feels pretty good. As long as we keep iterating on that and polishing it up, I don't think we're going to have a problem. It is very difficult but I think we can handle it. In terms of what first-person brings, I just think it's totally worth that risk. This is a world where I want to be able to look up and see the skyscrapers above me and third-person can't afford that. It almost seems like a tiny, trivial reason but that's actually really important.

Mills also admitted that this change was made to appeal to players that enjoy first-person shooters. This might make players anxious but keep in mind that first-person RPGs like Fallout 4 and Skyrim are remarkable games, so this title could be good as well. Plus, CD Projekt Red has a number of high-quality developers, as their work on The Witcher 3 proves.

Here is hoping this gamble pays off and Cyberpunk 2077 will be a blast to play, whenever it comes out. Let's hope it doesn't actually come out on 2077.
