Creators Of Death Note 'Loved' The Netflix Remake

Just like Ghost in the Shell before it, a lot of bashing is already going out to Netflix's American adaptation of the hit manga/anime, Death Note. The movie is set to release on the streaming service next month, and news has it that original Death Note creators love the film.

According to LRM, producer Masi Oka was able to show an early screening to writer Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata. Here's what he has to say:

"The greatest moment for me was going to Japan and showing the film to [creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata], and we had a private screening for them. And when they came out and said, ‘Thank you,' and ‘We love the film,' it really just brought a tear to my eye, because I'm an otaku and a geek just like everyone. I grew up on this, so having the senseis be proud of our films makes me proud, and hopefully in turn will make the fans proud of the film as well."

Some fans who are already complaining about the supposed "whitewashing" of this movie should take in mind that there are already several live-action adaptations of Death Note starring and made by Japanese talent. I don't see the reason why they have to complain so much about an American remake.

I've read some of the manga, and I can say that the story of Death Note can very easily be adapted into any culture. It's an interesting cat-and-mouse chase going between Light and L, and I can see it all transitioning seamlessly into an American setting.

Death Note airs on Netflix Aug. 25.
