Light Meets Ryuk For The First Time In Clip From Netflix’s Death Note

Netflix's Death Note adaptation comes out next month, and in the spirit of Comic Con, we get a new clip from the movie showing Light's (Nat Wolff) first encounter with death god Ryuk (Willem Dafoe).

The clip has Ryuk trying to convince Light to use the Death Note for the first time; goading him on to kill one of the bullies in his school (violently, if I may add). Some fans have considered the portrayals in this movie different from the original—with Light being more sure of his actions in the comics, and Ryuk being neutral about his actions. Whatever it is, let's just hope director Adam Wingard knows what he's doing.

Ever since the movie was announced, a lot of backlash has been coming from fans of the original manga and anime and "whitewashing" has been a common criticism going around for this movie. The thing is, there's already an all-Japanese version of Death Note, and you can always watch that if you think this one is beneath you.

Here's the synopsis:

A student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone begins a crusade against evil in order to rule the world as a benevolent human god. Then a deadly game of cat and mouse begins when a reclusive detective begins to track down the young man, attempting to end his reign of terror once and for all.

Death Note comes out on Netflix Aug. 25.
