Cool New Trailer for Netflix's Ultraman Reboot

Neon Genesis Evangelion won't be the only icon coming to Netflix next year. The classic Ultraman franchise has had a reboot in the works, and Netflix has just given us our first trailer for the series.

Here's a description of the show (via ComicBookMovie):

Several years have passed since the events of Ultraman, with the legendary "Giant of Light" (光の巨人 Hikari no Kyojin) now a memory, as it is believed he returned home after fighting the many giant aliens that invaded the Earth.

Shin Hayata's son Shinjiro seems to possess a strange ability, and it is this ability, along with his father's revelation that he was Ultraman, that leads Shinjiro to battle the new aliens invading the Earth as the new Ultraman.

With the original Ultraman being live-action, this series will now embrace the cell-shaded CG look. Though I know some aren't a fan of it, I do think it's impressive how they decided to expand the story of the original, and there's even a teaser of the original Ultraman suit from the 70s.

I also love the new look of the suit. With the original appearance having aged badly, this new look seems to be a mix of Iron Man and the armor from Dead Space. Even the villain looks very reminiscent of the MCU's Ultron. I do like how they still gave Ultraman his signature energy beams that come out of his elbows.

Will the series succeed? Based on Netflix's reputation with anime reboots, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I guess it also helps to keep in mind that this series is originally meant for kids, so there's no use having a hissy fit about it ‘ruining your childhood.'

Catch Ultraman on Netflix April 1, 2019.
