Last year, it was reported that Warner Bros. is working on a sequel to the 2005 film Constantine with star Keanu Reeves, director Francis Lawrence, and writer Akiva Goldsman returning for another superhero horror adventure with the titular character.

However, with all the changes that are happening in the DC franchise and the recent strikes that have halted the development of projects across Hollywood, there have been some questions about whether the sequel will still happen.

Now, with the writers' strike finally done, we finally have a new update on the long-gestated sequel and, fortunately, it looks like fans can still hold their breath.

In an interview with Gamespot, Lawrence shared an update on the long-gestated Constantine sequel where he shared that the project is still in development and was held by the recently-concluded writers' strike.

He also revealed that they are pushing for the film to be R-rated and everyone on board is committed to making it happen.

"So Constantine 2 got obviously held up by the writers' strike. And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff. We have control," Lawrence said.

"Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there's more meetings of those that have to happen--the script has to be written--but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make a real rated R version of it."

This is an encouraging sign for the project since it is an indication that the film is still happening despite the shakeups in the DC franchise although they might delegate it into the Elseworlds corner instead.

A lot of fans have been excited about the prospect of a sequel since they've been clamoring for it for decades and it helps that Reeves' career experienced a resurgence recently thanks to the John Wick franchise.

It might take a while before we hear news on whether the sequel will move forward to production or it will unfortunately end up getting shelved. Obviously, fans are definitely hoping that it will become a reality in a few years.
