As fans eagerly await the third season’s release, the Classroom of the Elite novel series recently topped a popular annual light novel ranking in Japan.
In the latest edition of the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! (This Light Novel Is Amazing!) guidebook, three lists of the top 10 light novels in different categories were revealed (via Anime News Network).
The first category featured the top 10 light novels in the bunkobon category, and the Classroom of the Elite: Year 2 light novel series topped the list.
Classroom of the Elite: A Not-So-Typical School Series With Unexpected Twists and Turns
Classroom of the Elite is a light novel series by Shogo Kinugasa that’s published by the Kadokawa subsidiary, Media Factory. Its first part ran from May 2015 to September 2019.
It was then followed by a 2nd-year arc which began in January 2020.
The light novel series became popular enough that it got an anime adaptation whose first season aired from July to September 2017.
Meanwhile, Season 2 aired between July and September 2022. The show is also getting a third season which will air next year.
As for its premise, the series follows Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, a high school student that’s assigned to the Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing School.
Each class in the school is divided into four classes from A to D.
Of these, only the top classes are treated well. Kiyotaka is then assigned to the lowest class.

Classroom of the Elite Tops Light Novel Ranking
As mentioned above, the first list features the top 10 light novels in the bunkobon format.
In case you’re unfamiliar, bunkobon is a small-format paperback that’s similar to mass-market paperbacks in the US.
Here is the complete top 10 list in the category:
1. Classroom of the Elite: Year 2 written by Shogo Kinugasa and illustrated by Shunsaku Tomose
2. Chitose-kun Is in the Ramune Bottle written by Hiromu and illustrated by raemz
3. Watashi wa Anata no Namida ni Naritai written by Taiga Shiki and illustrated by Sue Yanagi
4. The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten written by Saekisan and illustrated by Hanekoto
5. Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian written by Sunsunsun and illustrated by Momoco
6. Ryūgoroshi no Brunhild (Brunhild the Dragon Slayer) written by Yuiko Agarizaki and illustrated by Aoaso
7. Watashi, Nibanme no Kanojo de Ii kara (I'm Fine With Being the Second Girlfriend) written by Jōyō Nishi and illustrated by ReTake
8. Spy Classroom written by Takemachi and illustrated by tomari
9. Days With My Stepsister written by Ghost Mikawa and illustrated by Hiten
10. The Detective Is Already Dead written by nigozyu and illustrated by Umibōzu
Meanwhile, the other category is for tankobon (a larger format than bunkobon).
The top 10 list for the tankobon category sees Ascendance of a Bookworm at the top spot, with other popular titles like Mushoku Tensei and Overlord as part of the list.
The third and final list ranks the top 10 new light novel titles, with Watashi wa Anata no Namida ni Naritai and Brunhild the Dragon Slayer from the top 10 bunkobon titles also making the list.
