Clark Gregg Returning to Agents of SHIELD Season 6, but NOT as Phil Coulson

Ain't that a title a shocker? When many saw Clark Gregg at the end of the first trailer of Agents of SHIELD season 6, many assumed that Coulson either faked his death or got amnesia. Turns out that neither of those things will be happening as Gregg will be playing a mysterious new character who isn't Phil Coulson. According to Gregg at least.

During an interview with Marvel.com, Gregg claimed that Agent Phil Coulson is dead but he would be returning to the show as someone new. This is completely shocking since many of us have associated him with Coulson for so long. Depending on how the writing goes, this could be really good or really bad but you can't fault the writers for trying something new.

With the team still reeling from Coulson's (supposed) death, their reaction to this character who looks just like their friend and mentor is going to be interesting, to say the least. Here is hoping that the mystery behind this character is done well and gets everyone talking, otherwise, it will be seen as a cheap stunt ala that time Family Guy killed Brian for a few episodes.

Fans are still waiting for the full details of Agents of SHIELD season 6, which may or may not deal with the fallout from Avengers: Endgame. Since the series is teasing new super-powered enemies, we might be in for an action-packed season.

Agents of SHIELD returns to ABC this summer.
