CBS Has Just Recast Spock For Star Trek: Discovery

This weekend, word broke out at the Star Trek: Discovery panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con that Discovery would be featuring the iconic character Spock during its second season on CBS.

While the news seemed to delight fans, it seems like the show's team is already deep in process of getting Spock on Discovery. Speaking in an interview with Variety (via ComicBook.com), Discovery co-creator, executive producer, and now the new showrunner Alex Kurtzman just recently revealed that he and his team have already picked out a new actor to play Spock in the show's second season.

"We are, we are casting a new Spock. It's not just a possibility, it's been done," Kurtzman told the publication during the interview.

While the showrunner wasn't open to sharing who the new Spock actually is, Kurtzman was pretty chatty talking about the challenges he faced in finding the right person to play a character as iconic as the half-Vulcan member of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

"Everybody assumes that just because Spock is all about logic, that there is no emotion in there and that's entirely untrue," the showrunner explains. "So, finding an actor who can convey what we know to be very Vulcan, but also reveal so much emotion in the eyes and in the small gestures, so you understand there's just a tornado of things happening under the surface is critical. So you need an actor who can do both of those things at the same time, which is very challenging."

Zachary Quinto might have been a great fit for the Star Trek movies, but having another actor fill in the role for TV can be a bit of a challenge. News that the role has been recast also comes as quite a surprise to the fanbase – after all CBS didn't make any announcement about having another actor to play the role during the Comic Con Weekend. What we do know is that there might be some sort of story-based secret surrounding the new Spock's role, one of the potential reasons why CBS is keeping the actor unannounced as of the moment. Let's just wait and see whether they make any other announcements soon.

Star Trek: Discovery makes its way back to CBS All Access for its second season on January 2019.
