CBS Developing Star Trek Animated Comedy With Writer Rick and Morty Writer

It looks like Star Trek fans have a whole lot of content coming their way. Not only are they getting a new Star Trek show starring The Next Generation's Patrick Stewart who's set to reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard, but they're also getting a brand new Star Trek animated comedy series.

ComicBook.com reports that word has started spreading that CBS All Access has just put in the order for a new animated comedy show set in the Star Trek universe. Titled Star Trek: Lower Decks, the series is to be developed by Mike McMahan, the show's new executive producer. McMahan is the Emmy-winning writer from the popular science fiction animated series, Rick and Morty.

Together with him is Star Trek: Discovery's Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Katie Krentz, and Trevor Roth.

According to Kurtzman, McMahan's vision for the series helped win over the Star Trek production team and helped push Lower Decks into fruition.

"Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: 'I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.' His cat's name is Riker. His son's name is Sagan. The man is committed," Kurtzman explained.

A true animated series, Lower Decks, will be filled with half-hour episodes that feature stories from the support crew of one of Starfleet's least valuable ships. That means there's going to be a lot of hijinks for fans to enjoy.

Lower Decks doesn't have a release date yet, but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
