We already know that Henry Cavill tried (and failed) to play James Bond as the role went to Daniel Craig. Now, producer Martin Campbell has revealed why the Man of Steel star simply didn't cut it as 007 in Casino Royale.
Casino Royale Producer Shares Details on Henry Cavill's Failed 007 Audition
Martin Campbell served as the producer on Casino Royale and it was his job to meet with the actors who were trying out for the role of James Bond.
Campbell revealed to The Daily Express that the producers were impressed with Henry Cavill, so much so that he could have landed the job if Daniel Craig didn't audition for the role.
"He looked great in the audition," he said.
"His acting was tremendous. And look, if Daniel didn’t exist Henry would have made an excellent Bond," Campbell added.
"He looked terrific, he was in great physical shape… very handsome, very chiselled," he continued before confirming that Cavill was too young to play 007.
"He just looked a little young at that time back then," Campbell stated.
Interestingly, the report confirms that Henry Cavill was 23 at the time of his audition for Casino Royale and was deemed too young. However, he is now considered too old for the role since he is in his early 40s.
"Henry’s 40, so by the time he’s done the third one he’s going to be 50 and anything beyond that’s two, three years per Bond," Campbell said.
"He’s in good shape Henry, he’s a good guy. He did very well in the audition, but ironically he was too young," he added.
Unfortunately, it looks like playing James Bond simply isn't in the cards for Henry Cavill. Nevertheless, he has played several amazing roles in his career, including Clark Kent aka Superman in Man of Steel.
