Carrie Fisher’s Brother Writes A Statement Regarding Leia’s Return In Star Wars: Episode IX

It came as quite a surprise when Lucasfilm announced that the late Carrie Fisher would be making an appearance in the third and final film in its sequel trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX. The legendary Star Wars actress passed away before she could complete her scenes for the film back in December 2016, and fans rallied strongly against Disney recreating her image digitally just so that they could bring her back to the big screen.

Though Disney promised back in 2017 that it had no intentions of digitally recreating Fisher, the company surprised everyone when it announced that the actress would appear in Star Wars: Episode IX using unseen footage shot during The Last Jedi. Now, Fisher's brother Todd has issued a statement regarding the announcement (via Deadline), giving Episode IX director J.J. Abrams and his team his approval.

"As we, her family, as well as her extended family of fans around the world so believe, Carrie's ‘Princess Leia is forever entrenched in the franchise and her indelible presence is fundamental to the film," Todd Fisher wrote in his statement. "J.J. Abrams understood Carrie's iconic role, and he has masterfully re-crafted this final entry to include this unused and very last footage of Carrie ever taken, without resorting to CGI or animatronics. Our family and her fans will look forward with great anticipation for this one! Her force will forever be with us!"

It's great to see that Todd is also on board with Lucasfilm bringing Carrie back to the big screen. While there has been previous opposition to the idea of Lucasfilm digitally recreating the Star Wars legend for the film, fans wouldn't mind seeing the studio using extra footage to bring the actress back so that they could finish Leia's arc in Star Wars: Episode IX. After all, Leia deserves a good end.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to premiere on December 20, 2019.
