There was a lot of controversy in Captain Marvel's (Brie Larson) first appearance in the promotional campaign for Avengers: Endgame. While fans were excited to see Carol after her debut in Captain Marvel, many were disappointed to see that she had on a different look for Endgame. Fans were outraged by the fact that Captain Marvel was made to wear make-up in the second entry to Joe and Anthony Russo's two-part Avengers movie even though she had very minimal make-up in Captain Marvel.
However, while many blamed it on the male gaze of the directors, the real reason why Captain Marvel had a different look for Endgame was actually because of Larson herself. During the press junket for the highly anticipated Avengers movie, Slash Film asked the Russo Brothers about Larson's controversial look in the film.
According to the directors, Carol's look was actually all up to Larson and her hair and make-up team.
"She [filmed Avengers: Endgame] before she filmed Captain Marvel, and I think she was experimenting with what the character was. And those were the choices that she and her hair and makeup team had made," the directorial duo revealed, "And I think as she started to gain a deeper understanding of the character, especially as she approached her own movie. She started to make different choices and as an artist, she should be afforded that right to make whatever choice that she wants to make."
This definitely makes sense. Larson may have been still experimenting on her role as Captain Marvel in Endgame – after all, she filmed the movie before she actually worked on her debut in Captain Marvel. Fans shouldn't have any concerns over her make-up choices in the film.
Avengers: Endgame premieres April 26, 2019.
