Captain Marvel Lead Brie Larson Discusses Carol's Relationship With Maria Rambeau, Monica's Mother

When Lashana Lynch was cast for Captain Marvel, many were hoping that she would be Monica Rambeau, a character who held the Captain Marvel moniker and had an awesome power-set. Now, fans know that she is actually Maria Rambeau, the mother of Monica and someone who wasn't really explored in the comic books. Lead star Brie Larson recently discussed Carol's relationship with Maria and how different it will be when compared to other superhero movies.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Larson stated that the dynamic between Carol and Maria is an important part of the film since both of them are equals when it comes to their air force training. Larson also states that Maria represents "love" in this movie but that it's not a lustful kind of love, which is an interesting statement. Both characters have mutual respect for each other, whilst also being playfully competitive.

Honestly, it doesn't sound that different from the other friendships we've seen in superhero movies, though it should be a fun dynamic nonetheless. Seems like this could also set up Carol's eventual friendship with Monica Rambeau, who will probably be born by the time Avengers 4 comes out. A Captain Marvel 2 suddenly sounds appetizing.

Rambeau actually had the Captain Marvel moniker before Carol, though the latter did get her powers first. Monica was even an Avenger and teamed up with Spider-Man a few times. Carol always wanted to respect Mar-Vell by not taking up his name, using Ms. Marvel and Warbird before eventually accepting that she could live up to his legacy by using the name.

Captain Marvel comes out on March 8, 2019.
