Captain Marvel: First Look At Maria Rambeau Confirms Awesome Photon Connection

Photon is officially making her big-screen debut. However, it isn't Monica Rambeau that will be playing a big role in Captain Marvel. The spotlight will be shining on her mother Maria Rambeau.

Marvel Studios has released the first photo of Lashana Lynch as Carol Danvers' good friend Maria. The "top-notch Air Force pilot" also happens to have an interesting call sign (via Entertainment Weekly). Take a look at the picture below.

It's no secret that Monica's first alias is Photon before she was called Captain Marvel. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it looks like Monica adopted the name because it was her mother's original call sign when Maria was still part of the Air Force. That certainly lends an awesome little detail we could hopefully look forward to in future MCU films.

Maria's backstory is definitely different from her comic book counterpart. In the comics, she is a seamstress who constantly worries about her superpowered daughter. Captain Marvel is also doing away with Maria's comic book husband Frank since the character's description lists her as "a single mother to a young daughter." Hopefully, this could mean we will meet a little Monica in the film before she possibly appears in other MCU movies.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Samuel L. Jackson, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Clark Gregg, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, and Annette Bening in an undisclosed role. The film is directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.

Catch Maria in action when Captain Marvel premieres on March 8, 2019.
