Captain Marvel 2 May Finally Correct MCU's Awful Portrayal of [SPOILERS]

Captain Marvel was a pretty solid comic book film but that's not to say that it didn't have its shortcomings. In fact, it left a bad taste in the mouths of some Marvel fans, myself included for changing the dynamic between the Kree and the Skrulls. The 2019 film made a shocking change to how both races were presented, with the Kree becoming the villains and the Skrulls being turned into the good guys.

Some fans were disappointed at how Marvel Studios handled arguably one of Marvel Comics' greatest villains and all hope seemed lost for a proper live-action adaptation of the iconic Secret Invasion storyline.

Last December, Kevin Feige announced during Disney's 2020 Investor Day that the studio is set to work on a Secret Invasion series that Samuel L. Jackson will headline. This of course gave fans renewed hope that the Skrulls could finally be handled better and would be turned into proper villains just like in the comics.

Now, Captain Marvel 2, could potentially see the Skrulls expose their true colors. It was just confirmed that the highly-anticipated sequel has officially cast Zawe Ashton of Velvet Buzzsaw fame in a yet-to-be-disclosed role. Considering Secret Invasion ties directly into Captain Marvel 2, it's safe to assume that the actress could end up playing the Skrulls' Queen Veranke who was a key villain in the comics.

The question is, how can the MCU explain the Skrulls' potential turn to the dark side? The quickest fix would be to say that the Skrulls have always been villainous creatures with the intention of taking over the universe and they were just playing goody two shoes all this time. Or they could tell the tried and tested tale of good guys turning evil after an unfortunate circumstance.

Regardless of how they plan to execute things, I certainly hope Marvel Studios makes up for the mistake they committed as not turning the Skrulls evil this time around would totally be a missed opportunity. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Meanwhile. Captain Marvel 2 will hit cinemas in 2022.
