Following the devastation of a train catastrophe in the previous episode, the nuns, nurses, and people of the surrounding community try to cope with the crisis while worrying about the fate of two of their own. In the Call the Midwife Season 11 finale, a familiar face returns to help them get through the crisis.

Did somebody die in the Call the Midwife Season 11 finale?

A startling change of events in the last seconds of Episode 7 left Call the Midwife fans stunned. The train carrying Dr. Turner (Stephen McGann), Nurse Corrigan (Megan Cusack), and Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) wrecked on their way home after a midwifery conference.

Nancy was only slightly hurt and was able to flee. In a different carriage, however, Dr. Turner and Sister Julienne were both unconscious and perhaps gravely hurt.

Both Dr. Turner and Sister Julienne had survived the tragedy, but that didn't mean they were fully safe. Dr. Turner had suffered a severe brain injury. Sister Julienne appears to have had a heart attack just before they were rescued.

Sister Julienne was relieved to learn that her symptoms were caused by the stress of the accident, not her failing heart, and both were on their way to recovery by the time the credits rolled.

Unfortunately, two other characters did not fare well in the Call the Midwife Season 11 finale. Dorothy Carnie (Stephanie Jacob), who worked on the train serving tea to passengers, was gravely injured in the incident. She died not long after. Lionel Corbett (Marc Elliott) was also killed.

The return of Nurse Crane

The train collision resulted in all hands on deck at Nonnatus House, as nurses and midwives cared for those injured in the accident. But, with Sister Julienne out of the picture, there was a sense that no one was in charge.

Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen) took it upon herself to summon Nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett), who had been away on vacation for the past few episodes. She swiftly returned and whipped everybody into shape.

However, she couldn’t hide her shock at finding that Matthew Aylward (Olly Rix) and Cyril Robinson (Zephryn Taitte) had both spent the night in the convent.

By the end of the Call the Midwife Season 11 finale, everyone had come together at Nonnatus House for a welcome home meal for Sister Julienne. They had been through a lot but faced it together, and they were ready for whatever else might come their way.

Call the Midwife will return for a new season in 2023.
