Bumblebee Director Talks Spielberg Influence; New Image Of Bee As A Volkswagen Bug

Michael Bay has bowed out of the Transformers franchise, and Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) is helming the Bumblebee prequel spinoff movie. With the movie focusing on "a tiny corner of [the Transformers] canvas," Knight talks about his influence when making this film.

Talking to Empire (via ComicBookMovie), Knight explains:

"At its core it's just a beautiful love story between two broken souls who find each other and heal each other… I grew up loving those classic Spielbergian Amblin films. And we're trying to evoke that kind of emotion in this movie, fusing a rich coming-of-age story with some sci-fi insanity."

Here's also a new image of lead actress Hailee Steinfeld with the classic Volkswagen Bumblebee:

Though Bay had introduced us to a Bumblebee that was primarily a Camaro in the first Transformers, it was still a fun nod to have an old and busted yellow bug right next to Bee in Bernie Mac's used car dealership. I having a feeling though, that this movie won't end with Bee in that junkyard ready to get bought by Sam Witwicky.

Here's the official synopsis:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee the Autobot seeks refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. Charlie, on the brink of turning 18 years old and trying to find her place in the world, soon discovers the battle-scarred and broken Bumblebee. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns that this is no ordinary yellow Volkswagen.

Bumblebee comes out Dec. 21, 2018.
