BTS will miss the Billboard Music Awards 2022 in Las Vegas on May 15. Despite having six nominations, a music industry insider revealed Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook can’t make it to the ceremony this year.

So, what’s the reason for BTS’s absence?

BTS’s Non-Appearance in BMA 2022

The global hitmakers received nominations in six different categories. They get a nab for Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist, and Top Billboard Global Artist (excluding the U.S.).

They also receive two Top Selling Song nominations, thanks to “Butter” and “Permission to Dance.” In addition, they are nominated for Top Billboard Global Song (excluding the U.S.) and Top Rock Song.

These seven recognitions mark the highest number of nominations that any group or duo has received in a year at the BMA, per AllKpop.

Sadly, as BTS is currently busy with their comeback album, they can’t make it to the awards show. Instead, the group will only be recording an acceptance speech if they win in any category.

BTS Made History at 2021 BMA

Meanwhile, BTS made history at last year’s BMA after winning every nomination they received. Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook came out as the night's biggest winners.

They bagged in the Top Duo/Group, beating the likes of AC/DC, AJR, Dan + Shay and Maroon 5. This event even marked the second time the group won this category, ending up as the fourth band to win this honor more than once.

The South Korean superstars also took home the Top Social Artist award, making them the second artist to do so. According to Forbes, Justin Bieber won the same category the first six years it was offered.

Since then, BTS has been snagging this award for five years. So if they win this category again this 2022, they are about to match the all-time record.

With the success of “Dynamite” experienced, the global superstars won the Top Selling Song. The track became a part of the Hot 100 and ended 2020 as the bestselling song in the U.S.

They were also the fifth group nominated for the top-selling song, in addition to Maroon 5, Imagine Dragons, Twenty One Pilots and The Chainsmokers.

In addition, BTS was the only group to win the Top Selling Song unaccompanied with the song “Dynamite.” They were also the first group to win the Top Song Sales Artist after being included in the BMA in 2016.

If those were not yet enough, the boys were the fifth act to win the Top Song Sales Artist, joining the likes of The Weeknd, Lizzo, Ed Sheeran and Drake.

Lastly, BTS was the fourth group nominated for Top Song Sales Artist, along with The Chainsmokers, Twenty One Pilots and Imagine Dragons.

So, fans have to wait and see what new honors and records BTS will be making at the BMA this year.
