Box Office Analysts Predict That Female-Led Comic Book Movies Will Lead Hollywood’s Future

It started with the success of the DC Extended Universe's Wonder Woman standalone movie paving the way for female-led superhero movies in Hollywood. Now, Captain Marvel and Black Widow on the way, box office analysts say that women's presence in the comic book genre will continue to grow as female-led superhero movies become the future.

Speaking in an interview with CNBC, box office analyst Karie Bible from movie consulting firm Exhibitors Relations expects female-led comic book movies to continue its upward trajectory. Representation and diversity have had an important thread of discussion in cinema these past few years, especially after the exceptional performance of Marvel's Black Panther, and Crazy Rich Asians.

"Female superheroes should be a consistent presence going forward. As the stunning success of Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians has taught us, representation matters," Bible said. "Women want to see themselves reflected on screen and empowered. Why should the men get to have all the fun?"

Before the surprising success of Wonder Woman, female-led superhero movies were always seen as potential flops. A lot of studios wanted to avoid the losses from films that they believed would have ended up like the 2005 Elektra and the 2004 Halle Berry-led Cat Woman. Warner Brothers itself didn't believe that Wonder Woman would be the success that it was when it premiered early last year.

Now in the wake of Wonder Woman, Black Panther, and Crazy Rich Asians' success, the clamor for diversity and representation will continue to grow stronger, bringing in more films starring women and people of color.

Captain Marvel makes its debut on March 09, 2019.
