In just a couple of months, the highly-anticipated DC film Blue Beetle will finally arrive in theaters. Fans have been looking forward to seeing the titular hero's long-awaited debut on the big screen, especially with Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña playing him.
As usual, the plot remains under wraps at the moment, but the trailer has teased that it's going to be yet again another fun action-packed superhero film and Jaime Reyes' family is also seemingly going to be key figures in the hero's journey.
However, What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillen was absent in the footage of the film's first preview and his role was being kept a secret. Now, we finally have the details about his mysterious character.
Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Guillen is Dr. Sanchez, a character who works for the villainous Victoria Kord.
"When I read the script, it was the first time that I felt that I could get through a whole movie and feel seen," the actor told the outlet regarding his emotional response to the film.
"The verbiage that's being used in the household, it is very driven by family and heart at the forefront of everything, which is very Latino culture."
Guillen also noted the film's important representation since it is the first DC movie to feature a Latino superhero at the forefront.
"I just read that script and I was like, 'Wait, I grew up watching or listening to this.' 'That's exactly what my mom would say [or] my tía," he said.
"Everything has been thought out, while still telling the traditional story of this incredible DC superhero that is coming to theaters for the first time, the first Mexican superhero that we've had in a DC film."
The actor also discussed his character's "complex" role in the film and the moral dilemma that he is facing as he is serving the villain.
Guillen continued, "The character was complex. You're loyal to the profession and the job that you have, and you're loyal to being a good person, and you have to make a choice."
"Sometimes we don't make the choices. We're human. And when given a choice, we might make the wrong one."
Based on the description and the actor's comments, it looks like Guillen's Dr. Sanchez will be a pivotal figure in the story and it could be the cold case of someone turning to the good side at some point during the film.
It is exciting to see what else they have in store for the upcoming DCEU film, especially since it is now set to be one of the last entries in the franchise's current iteration before segueing to the rebooted DCU franchise.
