Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's Composer Confirms Massive Change to Namor’s Origins

Among many surprises of Marvel Studios' panel at last week's San Diego Comic-Con was the first look at the long-awaited sequel to 2018's Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Wakanda Forever will pay tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, but will also serve as the debut of several Marvel Comics characters, including Ironheart (Riri Williams) and King of Atlantis, Namor The Sub-Mariner. However, it looks like Marvel Studios once again retconned another hero's origins.

It's no secret that Namor would be the big bad for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, together with his submerged nation, Atlantis. Sadly, it seems that the submerged underwater kingdom would be tied to Aztec mythology and will be called Talocan instead of Atlantis.

In Wakanda Forever's Prologue album press release (via Comicbook), composer Ludwig Goransson seemingly confirmed the massive shift from Atlantis to Talocan.

"During the nights on these trips, we had recording sessions with contemporary artists who were akin to the characters and thematic material explored in the film," the composer wrote. "Using Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole's script as a blueprint, along with the recordings from the traditional musicians, we began to build a musical vocabulary for the characters, storylines, and cultures of Talocan and Wakanda."

From Shuma-Gorath's retcon down to Ms. Mavel's jaw-dropping origin alteration, this is no longer surprising for Marvel Studios. Although the studio did not directly disclose why they had to disregard Atlantis, this might all point out to Namor's DC counterpart, Aquaman. Played by Jason Momoa, Aquaman first roamed around the DCEU as the King of Atlantis ever since his debut on 2017's Justice League. That said, Marvel Studios might have decided to move away from the Atlantis narrative to avoid the foreseeable buzz that Namor was just a Marvel rip-off of Aquaman.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will hit the big screens on November 11.
