Black Panther Star Teases Sequel's Development: "It's Going to Top The First One"

2018's Black Panther was a massive success for Marvel Cinematic Studios. Aside from positive reviews from critics and audiences, Black Panther was also the first-ever superhero film to be nominated for Oscar's Best Picture category which unfortunately lost to Mahershala Ali's Green Book. While the film continuously received praises, the world was struck over the tragic death of Black Panther lead star Chadwick Boseman from colon cancer, which the actor had secretly endured over the years of playing T'Challa for two more Marvel films throughout his career.

Chadwick Boseman's death was very heartbreaking but the MCU announced that they will continue developing a second Black Panther film, according to Marvel president, Kevin Feige, they will not recast T'Challa, and the sequel will address Boseman's absence moving forward.

Black Panther 2 will reunite the cast featuring Letitia Wright as Shuri, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M'Baku, and Angela Bassett as Queen Ramonda. With T'Challa now gone, these characters will step up on a more prominent role while also paying tribute to the late MCU veteran.

While Wakanda: Forever's plot remains a mystery, some reports claim that the sequel will be much bigger compared to the first film. Now, Ramonda actress Angela Bassett sat down as a guest for Ellen The Degeneres Show to talk about her upcoming film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Bassett claimed that the upcoming Black Panther sequel will be better than the first one, saying, “It’s going to be amazing. It’s going to top [the first] one. Can I say that? Marvel, can I say that?”

When asked if it was challenging to return to filming without Chadwick Boseman, Bassett responded, “It is. He was such an example, such a leader, an amazing talent — we all know that. Big heart, great intellect, and we just hope to raise his standard. It will be amazing. Our director Ryan Coogler. Writer. Director. Perfect leader.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is one of the highly-anticipated MCU films aside from the upcoming Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. While we don't have any further details about the film yet, Bassett's comment about the sequel assures that the film will be substantial to the future of the MCU.

Recent reports also claim that Namor will finally make his debut in the MCU through the Black Panther sequel and that Shuri, T'Challa's sister, will be wearing the Black Panther mantle across the MCU. More importantly, the sequel will address T'Challa's fate, and how the franchise will move forward without the fan-favored King of Wakanda.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to premiere in theaters on November 11, 2022.
