Black Panther Beats Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Opening Weekend Record

Black Panther is certainly out to win.

Earlier this week, news had it that Marvel's first standalone film for the King of Wakanda (Chadwick Boseman) was tracking to bring in $218 million during its four-day domestic opening.

Now the numbers are in (via Box Office Mojo), and it seems like Black Panther has set up a new record, moving past Star Wars: The Last Jedi with a total haul of $ 242 million at the domestic box office. That's $400,00 ahead of Lucasfilm's latest Star Wars installment, making the film the second highest four-day grosser of all time. In first place is Star Wars: The Force Awakens which opened at a whopping $288.1 million.

Black Panther has certainly been doing exceptionally well – which isn't a surprise, considering the cultural and social impact the film has on the comic book movie genre. Not only is Black Panther T'Challa's first standalone movie, it's also Marvel's predominantly black superhero film. Audiences have become increasingly aware of the value of representation and diversity, and nothing spells diverse than a film that focuses on a black superhero who rules an amazing country. Director Ryan Coogler did his very best to deliver a new story to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it looks like the story is resonating with its audience.

Black Panther is currently screening in cinemas.
