We'll also be taking on some of the things we learned from the episode and whether or not Iain Adair is based on a real person.

Despite being a British anthology series, it's surprising that no Black Mirror episode has ever been shot in Scotland.

So when an opportunity to shoot an episode came, series creator Charlie Brooker decided to create a fictional Scottish town.

Suffice to say, Loch Henry is not a real town in Scotland. It was purely created for the episode, which is also called Loch Henry. The episode, however, was filmed by a Scottish loch, which refers to a lake.

The episode was filmed in the western Scottish Highlands of Inveraray, Argyll and Bute. This is a sleepy town next to Loch Fyne, which has an estimated population count of only 570.

The cast and crew of the show filmed on Main Street in September 2022. The crew also filmed in The Village Inn, Arrochar, which is just 20 miles away from Inveraray.

Apart from Black Mirror's Loch Henry episode, other shows and movies that have filmed in this town include Downton Abbey, Netflix's A Castle for Christmas, and PBS' Great Estates Scotland.

The official synopsis of Loch Henry reads:

"While filming a nature documentary in a sleepy Scottish town, a young couple catches wind of a juicy local story with ties to shocking past events."

The episode follows Davis (played by Samuel Blenkin) as he brings his girlfriend, Pia (played by Myha'la Herrold), to his hometown. While there, Pia meets Davis' mom, Janet (played by Monica Dolan), who is a sweet and old-fashioned woman.

After seeing the place, Pia can't help but wonder why Loch Henry has become a ghost town. Pia meets Davis' old friend, Stuart (played by Daniel Portman), who shares the tragic history that haunted their town.

Pia encourages Davis to film a documentary about the Iain Adair murders and to awaken the world to the horrors of the town.

Together with Stuart, Pia manages to convince Davis to create the documentary as a way of getting tourists to visit their town once again. Only this time, they discover a new truth.

The episode is then captured in the tacky way that true crime documentaries do. Brooker compared the visually stunning drone shots of these documentaries to eating a gourmet burger:

“to have a good old bloody gawp. You’re still eating something full of fat and salt, but because it’s called an artisan burger, you almost feel good about yourself rather than like a horrible pig.”

Is Iain Adair a Real Person?

No, Iain Adair from Loch Henry was not a real person. But his story sounds so similar to most serial killers from the 90s.

In this case, Loch Henry was actually a place brimming with tourists in the 90s. That is, until a vacationing couple suddenly went missing and discovered dead after having been tortured by Iain Adair.

Stuart and Davis tell Pia the story of Iain's discovery, which could be credited to Davis' dad, Kenneth's discovery. Kenneth was a local cop who investigated Iain after receiving a call from Stuart's dad, inn-owner Richard.

It turns out that Iain had been drunk at the bar and said weird things to Richard. When Kenneth arrived at Iain's farm, Iain shot his parents and committed suicide. Kenneth was also shot in the process but was able to survive and call for help.

When police arrived, they investigated the property and found a secret bunker where Iain had been torturing people. Police found a total of eight bodies throughout the farm, including the missing couple.

In the ending, however, Davis uncovers something sinister about what truly happened in the past. And although the truth affects him personally, he has an obligation to share it with the world.
