Birds of Prey Screenwriter Says Batgirl Is Still In Development

Warner Brothers might be busy working on the DC Extended Universe's upcoming all-girl team-up movie Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), but that doesn't mean that the studio's forgotten its Batgirl project.

While there's been very little information about the Batgirl movie ever since Avengers director Joss Whedon left the project, writer Christina Hodson promises fans that the film is still in the works. Comic Book Movie just recently spoke with Hodson, Batgirl's scribe who also wrote the script for Paramount Picture's Bumblebee. During their interview, the news outlet asked Hodson whether she thought actress Hailee Steinfeld would fit the role of the DCEU's Barbara Gordon, and while the scriptwriter couldn't give away that information, she opened up about writing the character.

"[That's] above my paygrade," Hodson said laughing. "Not something I can speak to. But, yeah, I'm loving writing it, I can say that, it's a total joy to work on. I love the character. And everyday I'm finding new things to love and get excited about."

While we don't really know how far production for Batgirl is going without a director to oversee the project, it certainly is reassuring to know that Hodson is still working on the script for the project. Barbara Gordon has been one of DC's most popular characters and fans have been clamoring to see her again on the big screen.

Though there isn't any certainty about Batgirl's appearance in Birds of Prey, rumor has it that Barbara will debut in the film.

Birds of Prey is scheduled to release February 7, 2020.
