After all these months of rumors and reports, Warner Bros. has officially announced the release date of Birds of Prey. The film will be coming to theaters on February 7, 2020, and will star Margot Robbie, who is reprising her role as Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad. No other roles have been cast yet, though a number of reports have claimed that Black Canary and Huntress will be in the movie as protagonists.
The Hollywood Reporter states that Cathy Yan will be directing the film and that it will screen in IMAX, so expect a lot of impressive set pieces. Currently, those in the running for the Black Canary role are Gugu Mbatha-Raw from A Wrinkle in Time, Jurnee Smolett-Bell from Underground, and musical artist Janell Monae. Margaret Qualley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cristin Milioti are being considered for the Huntress role.
Interestingly enough, Warner Bros. is also looking to cast Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain. Montoya is known for being one of Gotham's best policewomen and took up the alias of The Question before Flashpoint happened. Montoya has been romantically linked to Batwoman, making them one of comic's more well-known LGBT couples. As for Cain, she was Batgirl for a good while but has recently adopted the name Orphan. She was a member of Batman's street team and looks to be a part of the upcoming Outsiders team book, which looks promising.
Harley Quinn doesn't really have any ties to the Birds of Prey, so it is odd seeing her in this group. Quinn does have an all-female group called Gotham City Sirens, which comprises of herself, Catwoman, and on-again-off-again lover Poison Ivy. Why they decided to make this a Birds of Prey film with Quinn is a bit of an odd decision, but at least original members like Black Canary and Huntress are confirmed.
Birds of Prey comes out on February 7, 2020.
