Birds of Prey Loses Big to Sonic The Hedgehog

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) might have been a crowd-pleaser among fans and critics, but the film didn't do very well when it premiered earlier this month. The Suicide Squad spinoff movie failed to reach industry estimates, opening to a low $33 million at the domestic box office.

Now that Sonic the Hedgehog's finally made its global premiere, it looks like Birds of Prey is sinking even further. According to CNBC, the children's movie broke the video game movie curse by raking in a $57 million haul during its opening weekend last weekend – the highest opening of any video game movie adaptation in the history of cinema.

While this is great news for Sonic fans, this doesn't really bode well for Birds of Prey. The film just crushed the comic book movie at the box office, gathering more audiences than the DC film.

Though fans might look down at Birds of Prey for losing to Sonic the Hedgehog, fans have to remember that Sonic has a lot going for it. Not only does the film come from a popular video game franchise, but it also features the talent of Jim Carrey and James Marsden.

Despite its strong reviews, Birds of Prey didn't do so well because of Warner Brother's poor marketing strategy for the film. Not only did the studio fail to give the film the full marketing push that it needed, but it also failed to make the film relevant to casual fans and to hardcore fans of the DC comic book universe.

Birds of Prey and Sonic the Hedgehog are currently screening in cinemas.
