Fans were hoping that Beyond the Spider-Verse was going to release this year, but it looks like the movie has a lot of catching up to do before it’s ready to officially release.
A rumor had been going around that the film has been mostly scrapped and the release date has been delayed indefinitely, but someone close to the production has come out to address the word going around online.
Chris Miller on the Status of Beyond the Spider-Verse
For context, the InSneider had reported that Sony had scrapped most of what’s already been done for Beyond the Spider-Verse, and the movie was likely going to release in 2027. Here’s the post from @DiscussingFilm:
Sony hadn’t addressed anything official, but producer Chris Miller had decided to post about the rumors, confirming that nothing from the movie is being scrapped. He writes:
The film’s composer Daniel Pemberton also retweeted the post, confirming that it isn’t accurate:
That being said Beyond the Spider-Verse is still yet to receive a release date, and a lot of fans are still wondering how long they would have to wait before they can see the conclusion of the clash between Miles Morales and the Spot.
Spider-Verse Animators Overworked?
Admittedly, when word was going around that the movie had been delayed, it didn’t seem too surprising. After all, last year Vulture had reported that several animators who had worked on the Spider-Verse movies had opened up about how they were overworked for Across the Spider-Verse.
A source outright names producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, saying:
“It is not as though Phil is unfamiliar with how animation works. His and Chris Miller’s work speaks for itself. Obviously, they are successful, and the work that they produce is good. Even I was a fan of their work; I would still say that I am. But because it’s successful, because it’s award-winning, he doesn’t have a lot of people stopping him from making the changes he wants to make.
“ The thing is, Phil and Chris are incapable of committing to an idea. They don’t really have a clear vision. What they’re good at is slowly and incrementally making things better through trial and error.”
Interestingly enough, it was this same kind of indecision from Lord and Miller that was said to have resulted in them getting fired from Solo: A Star Wars Story. Then again, it’s not clear to what extent the animators were overworked, but it’s telling that the director duo had been accused of the same thing in two movies now.
Hopeful for Beyond
Just looking at the work that went into the making of Across the Spider-Verse, a lot of fans think that the same kind of attention to detail is going to be put on Beyond—that’s why it’s taking the film so long to finish.
Despite the massive cliffhanger that Across ends with, fans are hopeful that the end product will be worth the wait.
Beyond the Spider-Verse still has no release date.
