- Quick Answer: Director Kane Parsons is planning an eventual endpoint for the Backrooms universe while developing a subversive second movie and continuing the web series.
Backrooms director Kane Parsons teases the future of his web series and its potential ending following the success of its first movie adaptation.
What started as a creepypasta has turned into a breakout franchise, with its first film becoming A24's highest-grossing movie to date and making Parsons the youngest filmmaker to reach No. 1 at the box office. It also became the second-highest-grossing horror film of 2026 and the fifth-highest-grossing independent film of all time.
So, with this string of successes, what's next for the Backrooms franchise?
What's Next for the Backrooms Franchise?

After the release of the first Backrooms movie in May, Kane Parsons confirmed that the horror franchise was far from over, with things already “in the works right now.”
In fact, the YouTube web series would continue, and he was also considering developing a television series based on it.
However, in a recent interview on The Kyle Buchanan Show, the 21-year-old director kept most of his story ideas under wraps but opened up about the franchise's possible ending.
“I think at a certain point you would know if continuation of Backrooms as a franchise would become–it’s done. You’ve said what there is to say,” he said. “And there will be a point where the final hump of everything that has kind of been said with everything prior kind of all comes together, and then what’s left after that?”
While Parsons has yet to reveal how the franchise might conclude, his comments suggest that he already has an eventual endpoint in mind for the Backrooms universe.
Will There Be a Backrooms Sequel?

A24 is reportedly eyeing a Backrooms sequel, though Kane Parsons has a different plan in mind. In fact, he doesn't want to milk the franchise or make another movie just for the sake of it. Instead, he wants to keep future installments subversive and take things in a slightly different direction.
The young filmmaker admitted that there were moments in the first movie when he felt he had failed to capture the cultural core of the franchise. That said, he wants to revisit and refine those elements in future films while becoming more confident in his understanding of the tone and ideas he wants to convey.
For Parsons, Backrooms is supposed to be stranger and less concrete than what people might expect from a movie.
While he understands that he has to change certain aspects for the film format, he still wants to explore what he believes Backrooms should feel like.
Although he refuses to reveal which characters will appear in the second installment, he teases that he already has specific characters in mind and is just waiting for the right opportunity to introduce them.
However, he clarifies that the story won't be directly interconnected with the first movie, describing the installments as “different branches on the tree.” It will also be very different from the YouTube series, as the online tales offer only brief glimpses into the franchise's mythology.
And while there are plenty of stories he wants to explore and a mythology that could continue for a long time, Parsons says he already has an endgame in mind for the franchise.
With a clear vision for its future and a possible endpoint already in mind, Parsons seems determined to expand the Backrooms universe without losing what makes it unique.
