Backrooms director Kane Parsons has addressed the now-in-development sequel, Backrooms 2, but it looks like the viral YouTube analog horror web series creator has one big problem with it.
A24 is now working on the second movie following the massive box office success of the first film, which earned a whopping $400 million against a $10 million budget, not to mention its positive reviews from critics.
However, it looks like Parsons has a different plan for his famed creepypasta story.
What Is Kane Parsons’ Plan for Backrooms 2?
Backrooms served as Kane Parsons’ directorial debut, taking his famous web series to the big screen.
Featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve in lead roles, the film became a huge phenomenon in the indie space and ended up being A24’s highest-grossing film so far.
However, while a sequel is now in the works, it may not go the route Parsons wants.
“I’ve said since the very beginning that the dream scenario would be a limited series for Backrooms to get to the main ending,” the youngest filmmaker to reach number one at both the US and global box offices told Deadline.
Since the found-footage web series started on YouTube in 2022, the 21-year-old creator revealed that he always had a plan for where he wanted to take it narratively.
“It’s just been about finding the proper way to package that,” he continued. “I can’t say anything but there’s been a very set arc to the whole thing from the beginning, and I just feel absurdly excited at the idea of actually being able to follow through on all of it.”
While the film format worked for the first movie and even earned big at the box office, he revealed that he was not really “into the big projections.”
“That’s not the area that I’m interested in following for the most part. I think it distracts from what I actually enjoy with the work,” he added. “But I knew there would be a certain level of people showing up for Backrooms given how ingrained in the world and the community online it already had been. So, I knew people would be curious, but the degree to which it burst into audiences outside of that was not something I anticipated.”
What to Expect From Backrooms 2?
While the exact details of Backrooms 2 have not been revealed yet, it remains to be seen how the sequel's plot will develop.
By the looks of it, it may work as an anthology, with each movie installment featuring a different set of characters entering the Backrooms through a different door.
In the film, Async researcher Phil (Mark Duplass) revealed that doors were springing up all over the place, and he had no idea why it was happening or how to stop it.
So, with the possible continuation of the investigation, Async and the Backrooms may remain connected in the second film, while new characters will be introduced as new parts of the infinite madness.
With all the major characters’ deaths, except for Mary (Renate Reinsve), it is actually hard to continue the same story from the first film. Mary’s story is also difficult to explore, and she may not be allowed to leave Async.
That said, Backrooms 2 may explore a new segment of the Backrooms with the same monotone yellow environment and buzzing fluorescent lights.
