Avengers: Endgame Writers Say Thor: The Dark World Had A Confusing Narrative

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) might be a pretty popular Marvel hero now, but his second standalone movie, Thor: Dark World, ended up being one of the least-liked films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the film did a passable job at the box office, it did very poorly among critics and among fans. Even Avengers: Endgame writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus weren't quite sure what story the film was trying to tell.

Thanks to the Avengers little time traveling Infinity Stone heist in Endgame, fans get to revisit some key moments in Dark World. Marvel just recently released Endgame on Digital HD, and thanks to the film's commentary track, fans get to know the directors and writers little secrets hidden in the film.

In the scene where Thor has to return to Asgard in 2014 to retrieve the Power Stone, McFeely opens up about his thoughts about The Dark World.

"It was when hitting upon this idea that the second act would be going back to the movies of the MCU and seeing them from new points of view," McFeely revealed. "The idea that we could sort of talk about them and sort of comment on them was kind of delightful... This is a good example, Thor: The Dark World has kind of a confusing backstory, that involves dark elves, and an every 5,000-year astronomical event."

However, while The Dark World had a pretty confusing narrative, it held key moments for Thor. Here, the Asgardian God of Thunder was able to revisit the mother and the family that he lost one by one throughout the years. Fans also get to see Natalie Portman's Jane Foster again, a character which as it turns out, we'll get to see as the new Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder.

No matter how confusing it is, The Dark World still has a place in the MCU.

Thor: Love and Thunder premieres on November 5, 2021.
