Avengers: Endgame Writer Explains Why Captain America’s Fate Was For The Best

Avengers: Endgame might have given Captain America (Chris Evans) the perfect ending by allowing the Avengers super soldier to go back time to live out the rest of his life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), however, Steve Rogers' decision to stay with Peggy has sparked a number of questions among fans, including the question whether or not Cap had inadvertently altered history.

Speaking during a panel on the science behind Endgame at this year's San Diego Comic-Con (in a quote which was just recently revealed by Screen Rant), writer Christopher Markus revealed why Captain America's "retirement" was the best move for the Avenger.

"Stephen [McFeely] and I are just so taken with the idea that Steve went back and somehow, therefore, has always been back. And he got to live his life. Because you get Captain America loyalists who say that if Cap goes back in time, he is honor-bound to fix everything he knows is going to happen. So he has to go save Bucky, he has to prevent the Kennedy assassination... he's a very busy man," Markus started.

In the panel, Markus explains that there was no other option for them to but to send Captain America back into the past.

"But that's not why we sent him back. We sent him back so that he could become a whole person, and finally come home from the war. We didn't want him to go back and just keep adventuring, we wanted him to rest. And the only way we could come to that solution is if there are two Caps. Which I'm okay with," the screenwriter admitted.

So it seems like there really is two Captain America's in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline after all. The only difference is that Captain America from Endgame decides to live a quiet life with Peggy while the other Captain America does all the work that he should do together with the Avengers. Scientifically, it might not make that much sense, but psychologically we understand why Captain America needed to come home to Peggy after all that he'd been through.

Avengers: Endgame is available on Digital HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
