James Cameron's Avatar took the world by storm when it was released back in 2009 and became the highest-grossing film of all time. For several years now, we know that they've been working on multiple sequels which have been delayed due to both the lengthy production time and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we will finally get to see the second film by the end of the year and people have been wondering about when they will get the first look at the sequel. Now, it looks like we finally know and it's sooner than you might think.
According to The Ankler, Disney is planning to debut the first trailer for Avatar 2 in front of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is set to hit theaters this coming May 6. It goes along with the usual tradition in which a trailer gets attached to the release of a film from the same studio. Given that both Marvel Studios and 20th Century Studios are under the same umbrella, it makes sense that Disney will decide to release the trailer of the highly-anticipated sequel during the time when they are releasing the next MCU tentpole.
While this information has not been confirmed by Disney, it is very likely to be true since, by that time, it will be seven months before the release in theaters. Also, the Disney marketing team might want to start ramping up its promotion for the sequel to regain the interest of the public regarding the franchise especially since it's been 13 years since the first film was released.
Right now, there is not a lot of buzz for Avatar 2 at the moment so this is an opportunity for them to make the general public excited for the film. We don't know yet what Cameron has in store for the sequel except that it will be yet again another mind-blowing film and potentially change the future of filmmaking with whatever innovation he made for the sequels.
Cameron has proven in so many years that he can deliver top-shelf entertainment with breathtaking visuals that could gross a billion dollars at the box office. It would be curious to see if the sequel will live up to the success of the first film 13 years ago.
