According to Exhibitor Relations, Walt Disney confirmed that Avatar: The Way of Water will be adding 138 theaters on its fourth weekend, giving it a total of 4,340 domestic screens for the sequel, seeing as it already passed through the $1 billion mark on the worldwide box office last Tuesday at $1.48 billion. With its additional screening, Avatar 2 is set to even surpass Top Gun: Maverick with $1.489 billion and is potentially on its road to becoming 2022’s highest grossing film, especially since the Avatar sequel also secured a release in China, contributing the highest numbers: $165.5 million.
As it stands, a film adding more screens upon its fourth blockbuster week is unheard of. The closest rival Avatar: The Way of Water currently has in terms of box office success is Avengers: Endgame, which lost its 400 theaters on its fourth weekend. In terms of box office longevity, Avatar 2 draws close to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Episode VII, which opened with 4,134 screens back in 2015 and reached four weeks maintaining the number of theaters (via Comicbook.com).
Avatar: The Way of Water brings Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their family to Pandora in which they strive to keep everyone safe among the Metkayina clan led by Kate Winslet’s Ronal and Cliff Curtis’ Tonowari.
