Ava DuVernay Directing The New Gods Movie for the DCEU

Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time just hit theaters, and it looks like the director has already found her next gig. After working with Disney, DuVernay is now in talks to direct a new movie for the Warner Bros' DCEU.

According to Deadline, DuVernay is already closing a deal with WB to direct an adaptation of The New Gods. Last year, she revealed that one of her favorite superheroes of all time was Big Barda, and seeing that Barda is part of the New Gods franchise, it would seem that it was DuVernay's suggestion to make a movie based on then characters.

The New Gods are a more obscure side of the DC Universe, but they were created by comic legend Jack Kirby. Their lore is basically, the old gods of the world were destroyed by Ragnarok, hence the New Gods came into being; they're split among two worlds, New Genesis and Apokolips, and they have powers since they live close to The Source.

It's pretty tough to explain, but the New Gods are also closely tied to the origin of Darkseid. Best guess is this movie is going to be a prequel to the entire DCEU.

With the DCEU still scrambling to put itself together, I personally think that they should put New Gods on the backburner for now. They're already working on an obscure hero for Shazam!, but maybe they should pump out films for more familiar heroes first like Nightwing and Batgirl. If anything, we might have to wait for New Gods to take form sometime in 2022.

No release date has been announced for The New Gods.
