Ava Duvernay Says Directing A Star Wars Movie Just “Isn’t For Me”

Progressive Star Wars fans might be hoping that Lucasfilm brings in more women and people of color to take up key creative positions in the production of their films, but A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVerney says she has no interest in helming a Star Wars movie.

Taking to Twitter, a fan decided to praise DuVerney for the visuals and message of A Wrinkle In Time, casually saying that her work should be enough to move her up under Lucasfilm's scanning system.

Though the filmmaker was happy that the fan enjoyed her film, the director decided to take her name out of the Star Wars running, saying that Lucasfilm's popular galaxy far, far away just wasn't for her.

While some would see a Star Wars movie as a huge opportunity for DuVernay, fans have to consider that some filmmakers aren't that interested in franchise films.

A few years ago, DuVernay turned down the offer to direct Black Panther, saying that the project wouldn't "be an Ava DuVernay film" if she had to compromise so that the film would fit right in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Though the Star Wars franchise seems to be taking a different direction now with The Last Jedi, creative control is still a major concern for directors who enjoy the liberty of working on their vision for the movies, so it isn't a surprise that DuVernay would want to avoid working for the Star Wars franchise.

A Wrinkle In Time premieres on March 9, 2018.
