In Attack on Titan Episode 79, Zeke and Eren Yeager explored their father's memories starting with Eren's birth. Interestingly, it is revealed that Grisha had never brainwashed Eren and had encouraged his younger son to find his own path, having forsaken his own Eldian nationalism. Still, Zeke insists that he can still use the Founding Titan to push through with his plan but refuses to abandon his brother.

As it turns out, Grisha's memories reveal a different side of the story when the brothers watch him confront the Reiss family. During the confrontation, Grisha pleads with Frieda to use the Founding Titan to save Paradis. He also reveals that the Attack Titan gives its host the ability to see the memories of its future inheritors.

When Frieda refuses to save Paradis, Grisha threatens to kill the Reiss family but is initially unable to do so. That's when Eren steps in and goads his father to slaughter the family.
