I think we can all agree that Don Cheadle has had a pretty lengthy and fruitful tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far, even outlasting his co-star and good pal Robert Downey Jr. who officially made his exit in 2019. His staying power in the MCU is quite astonishing, especially if you take into consideration how he wasn't the original actor to play James Rhodes aka War Machine/Iron Patriot in the franchise.

Rhodey remains to be one of the most influential characters in the MCU and fans can expect him to be an integral part of the entire Multiverse saga. As it stands, Cheadle is confirmed to be involved in three Disney+ shows — Ironheart, Secret Invasion, and Armor Wars and it would also be safe to assume that his character will also appear in the next two Avengers films.

However, it turns out that despite signing up for multiple appearances, the 57-year-old actor is currently not tied to a Marvel contract. During an interview with Variety at Disney's D23 Expo, Cheadle explained that he's no longer obligated to make his MCU return unless he's approached for a project.

He said: "I'm done with my contracted years in the MCU, so now, it's just like, if something sounds fun and I'm presented with it... let's go."

Don's contract situation definitely raises a lot of questions regarding the future of Rhodey in the franchise. However, it wouldn't be shocking if he wanted to end his tenure as some of the MCU OGs have already moved on.

The official release date for Armor Wars has yet to be announced but the project begins filming next year.
