Are Aziraphale and Crowley Gay? Good Omens Co-Author Neil Gaiman Responds

Now that the Good Omens television series is out for a few days now, fans have had the chance to bingewatch the whole thing since it only has six episodes. As a result, viewers have been reaching out to co-author Neil Gaiman to ask more about the adaptation.

One of the questions raised by a fan on Twitter is whether or not Aziraphale and Crowley are gay. "They're an angel and a demon, not male humans," he simply clarified. The fan accepted the answer and replied how awesome the dinners the two characters shared on the show.

Aziraphale and Crowley are played by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, respectively. In the Good Omens book, the two have become good friends even though they are polar opposites being the respective representation of good and evil.

They decided to work together to stop the end of the world because they've come to love their cozy lives on Earth. Naturally, the two would meet a lot and spend a lot of time together as they put their plan in motion. Some fans may simply have loved the onscreen chemistry and thought it was something more.

Gaiman's response suggests that in the universe established by the Good Omens book, which was adapted by the television series, celestial beings don't have gender specifications. It is also to be noted that even Beelzebub and Michael were played by women even though the general expectation was that they will be male.

Whether or not romance will still be possible between these entities is unclear. Gaiman did say that Aziraphale and Crowley "absolutely" love each other although it doesn't seem to be anything romantic.

The author also responded to a Twitter user who claims to have read the book tweeting her frustration over the supposed liberal propaganda that the Good Omens adaptation had. The tweets have already been deleted, but Gaiman maintained that the series was loyal to the book.

Good Omens is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime.
