Aquaman’s Jason Momoa Always Expected To Be Cast As A Villain

DC fans might be itching to see Jason Momoa's first standalone movie as Arthur Curry on the big screen, but the Aquaman star didn't really expect that he'd become a hero for the DC Extended Universe, instead believing that he'd be given the role of a villain the franchise.

Aquaman director James Wan just recently spoke about how perfect Momoa was for the role of the Atlantean king at the DCEU film's press junket in New York City (via CBR). Not only did the filmmaker praise the Game of Thrones star's personality, but Wan felt like filming Aquaman was much less about "bringing him to (the role of) Aquaman, but bringing Aquaman to him."

Momoa who was also present at the press junket opened up about what it felt like to be cast for the role, admitting that he never saw it coming.

"I could see Patrick (Wilson) getting hired for Aquaman. I'm the last person who should be hired for Aquaman," the actor told journalists at the junket.

Because of his massive body size and his gruff looks, Momoa has often been typecast as a baddie in various films and series. Even in Game of Thrones, Momoa plays Khal Drogo who starts off as a harsh man that fans eventually come to love as they see the Dothraki fall in love with his wife, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke).

"I thought I'd be playing the villain (in Aquaman)," Momoa added.

However, Momoa seems like the perfect fit for the role. Aquaman has always had the certain roughness to him, something which Momoa possesses in leaps and bounds. We can't wait to see the actor's natural charm and gritty appeal come together when Aquaman comes swimming into cinemas December 21, 2019.
